ADA stands for the “Americans with Disabilities Act”. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability. The law had wide-ranging effects and inspired subsequent federal, state, and municipal laws. And it also inspired a type of signage.
The National Institutes of Health estimate that over one million Americans are legally blind with other estimates putting the number of visually impaired Americans between three and four million. That’s clearly a lot of people and the National Federation of the Blind estimates that over 267,000 Georgians have a visual disability.
These people need to find their way around buildings, offices, restaurants, and retail stores just like anybody else. If your business is not equipped with ADA compliant signs, then not only are you unable to serve these customers, you might be in breach of ADA laws. ADA laws mandate that certain signs must contain braille for the legally blind to read, but also that the signs be properly placed and have easily readable text for those who are visually impaired.
